Excerpt

School-age children are defined as children ages 6–12 years. This chapter contains a framework for the mental health evaluation process, highlighting the critical components and identifying special considerations when working with a school-age child. Children may be evaluated in many settings: the emergency department, a pediatric hospital room, a school, or an outpatient psychiatric clinic, among others. The goals of assessment differ with the setting. The focus of this chapter is on the outpatient clinic setting, where the goal is to perform a comprehensive evaluation.
