We organize our approach to the therapist’s exploratory interventions under the heading of the interpretive process (Levy and Inderbitzin 1992; Sandler et al. 1992). The interpretive process can be conceptualized as a series of interventions, each building on the next, used by the therapist as she works with the patient to explore the patient’s subjectivity. Our discussion of the interpretive process spans three chapters. Here, we focus on the exploratory interventions of clarification, confrontation, and interpretation proper; in Chapter 11, we focus on the transference analysis and other tactics guiding the interpretive process. In Chapter 12 we complete our coverage of exploratory interventions with discussion of countertransference utilization, managing technical neutrality and the process of working through.
