In this chapter, we describe the strategies of transference-focused psychotherapy—extended (TFP-E); these are the basic principles that organize the treatment as a whole, with the goal of promoting identity consolidation and psychological integration. The strategies of TFP-E define the overarching approach employed by the therapist throughout the treatment and in each session, and are closely linked to the understanding of how the treatment promotes integrative processes in patients. The strategies of TFP-E are embedded in the object relations theory model of psychological functioning and personality disorder presented in Chapters 1–3 and in the model of the therapeutic relationship described in Chapter 5. The strategies of TFP-E presented in this chapter function as the scaffolding for the in-depth description of the treatment in the chapters to come.
