Forensic psychiatry is the psychiatric subspecialty in which psychiatric knowledge is applied to legal issues (Rappeport 1982). Forensic psychiatrists are in essence general psychiatrists with additional training in the intersection between psychiatry and the law. Practitioners become involved in forensic evaluations in which they may be asked to provide an expert opinion on a question posed by a legal authority, such as the court, or a civil body, such as a professional board of licensure or an insurance company. Additionally, they are regarded as experts in correctional mental health, providing specialized psychiatric evaluations and treatment for incarcerated individuals.
