Somatic symptom disorders are characterized by physical symptoms that defy medical investigation. They cause significant distress to individuals and can cause serious functional impairment. People with these disorders report troublesome medical symptoms to their physicians, take unnecessary medications, and even undergo needless medical procedures. The patient’s symptoms tend to baffle and frustrate physicians, who must balance their need to investigate the complaints while minimizing the possibility of inadvertently encouraging help-seeking behavior.
