Excerpt

According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, a child psychiatrist is “a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and the treatment of disorders of thinking, feeling, and/or behavior affecting children, adolescents, and their families” (American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry 2014). Although it is difficult to argue that these functions are not what most child psychiatrists spend the vast majority of their time doing, there is increasing momentum to broaden this definition and extend the influence and expertise of child psychiatrists into positive aspects of mental functioning. Clinically trained child psychiatrists, psychologists, and other types of counselors speak of themselves as mental health professionals, but the truth is that most have been trained as mental illness professionals. Most experts in depression, for example, spend little time trying to understand and study happiness, and most authorities on the effects of child abuse and maltreatment get little training on what parents can do to help their children thrive.
